Editorial strategy: recommendations below follow the cited character rules; the source table records the underlying facts.
Build and shop priorities
Mage's elemental modifier and starting Snake plus Scared Sausage point toward an elemental opening. Our editorial plan is to keep weapon scaling consistent with that advantage instead of splitting purchases into melee and ranged damage, whose modifications are suppressed. Burning and hit based effects should be checked individually: an item having an elemental theme does not prove that every source of damage triggers it. Scared Sausage has a dedicated interaction page for that reason. Compare flat elemental gains, the weapon's practical firing pattern, and the ability to maintain distance while the damage continues working.
Unlock and clear reward
Mage is one of the default base characters. A clear unlocks Thunder Sword. There is no separate challenge requiring the player to own Snake and Scared Sausage before selecting Mage; those are starting items on the character. Their presence is a build direction, not an instruction to buy every similarly named item offered in the shop.
Character source:Unlocked by default. Clear reward:Thunder Sword.
Danger 5 decisions
On Danger 5, inspect whether the current elemental setup handles a dense group or only an isolated target. A damage over time plan can leave dangerous enemies alive while the player waits for it to finish. Improve coverage or repositioning when that delay causes contact. Avoid buying ordinary ranged damage simply because the weapon's projectile looks like a gunshot.
Nightmare risk planning
Nightmare makes delayed kills and crowded retreats more consequential. Our recommendation is to maintain an immediate clearing option alongside damage that finishes later, using only effects the selected weapons actually support. Engineering also carries a penalty for Mage, so compare a structure purchase with an elemental upgrade instead of assuming both receive the character's main benefit. Keep enough defense to survive while ongoing effects resolve.
Compare the weapon classes and available stats, unlock entry, Danger 5 rules, and Nightmare changes before adapting the loadout.
Mage is a default character. Elemental damage is modified by plus 25 percent. Melee and ranged are modified by minus 100 percent, engineering by minus 50 percent. You start with Snake and Scared Sausage. A clear unlocks Thunder Sword. brotato-builds has a Mage page and the Steam guide repeats the elemental start. Scared Sausage is why people ask whether that item works with pets and structures; the item page holds the trigger list. On Mage I only need the starting copy and the elemental modifier.
