Local co-op, not matchmaking
Updated for Brotato 1.2.0.1 · checked 2026-11-05

Steam and GOG both say local co-op for up to four players. The Switch store page says two. I will not collapse those into one number. Materials and experience are shared, and a downed player can be revived, which is how the Game Rant co-op writeup describes a session.
There is no public or private server in the base game. Game Rant says that directly. If you wanted to play with a friend who is not in the room, that is a different page: Remote Play Together, or a Workshop mod. It is not a matchmaking button.
The full-release trailer shows the local session this page is about. I would read the player count for your platform before you buy a second controller.

FAQ
Is Brotato online?
Not with an official lobby. Local play is the feature on the store page. Remote Play Together is a Steam feature, not a Brotato server.
How many players?
Four on Steam and GOG. Two on the Switch listing. I keep both.
