Saves and item sets
Updated for Brotato 1.2.0.1 · checked 2026-11-05

Update 1.2 puts an item-set switch on the character select screen. You can turn a DLC or a free update's content off for a run without uninstalling it. That is the closest official answer to 'will the DLC change my game.' I have no sentence that says 'installing a DLC cannot corrupt a save.' I will not write that sentence.
New Dawn added three save slots you can copy or reset. The files are named save_v3 with a slot number, plus a .bak the notes tell you to rename if a run breaks. New Dawn also warned that an in-progress run from the previous version could crash, and the fix was to abandon it or roll back to a legacy branch.
So the practical reading is: progress is not reset by the item-set switch, backups exist, and an in-progress run at a version boundary has broken before. That reading is an inference on top of the backup steps, and the note below says so.

FAQ
Does the DLC delete my unlocks?
I cannot quote a promise. The item-set switch leaves the DLC installed and optional. Use the backup step if a run will not load.
Where is the save file?
The notes name save_v3 files and a .bak beside them. I do not publish a full disk path I did not read.
