Editorial strategy: recommendations below follow the cited character rules; the source table records the underlying facts.
Build and shop priorities
King rewards reaching high weapon tiers while punishing a loadout full of tier I equipment. Our editorial opening is to upgrade a compatible weapon family deliberately, checking whether a cheap purchase adds more value than its character penalty removes. A tier IV weapon improves both damage and attack speed through King's rule, so the value of completing that upgrade differs from a normal character's shopping calculation. Distinct tier IV items also provide health. Avoid buying unrelated white items merely because they are discounted; evaluate their useful effect alongside the health penalty printed in the character table.
Unlock and clear reward
To unlock King, hold three tier IV weapons at the same time. Combining everything into fewer slots before the requirement is satisfied defeats that objective. King's own run begins with a tier II weapon according to the character source. A successful clear unlocks Excalibur; it is the clear reward, rather than the prerequisite for selecting King.
Character source:Get 3 tier IV weapons at once. Clear reward:Excalibur.
Danger 5 decisions
For Danger 5, a future red weapon does not solve an immediate lack of coverage. Balance the plan to complete tier IV upgrades with enough present damage to clear crowds. If a boss is approaching, compare the next upgrade with health and recovery before rerolling away the entire budget. King's starting luck is useful context, not a guarantee that a particular red item will appear.
Nightmare risk planning
Nightmare increases the cost of a weak transition between the starting weapon and the first completed high tier. Keep a functioning attack pattern during that transition. A powerful final weapon setup still needs a route out of crowded areas and protection against mistakes. Our recommendation is to finish an affordable upgrade rather than abandon a working family for a theoretical perfect set.
Compare the weapon classes and available stats, unlock entry, Danger 5 rules, and Nightmare changes before adapting the loadout.
King is a tier-4 specialist. The public character page gives plus 50 luck, plus 25 percent damage and attack speed for each tier-4 weapon, and plus 5 max health for each distinct tier-4 item. Tier-1 weapons lose 15 percent damage and attack speed, and tier-1 items cost 2 max health, so the early shop is a tax. You also start on a tier-2 weapon, not a stick. The unlock is holding three tier-4 weapons in one run, and a clear unlocks Excalibur. brotato-builds points King at pistols, chain guns, and gatling-style guns plus on-kill items, and the highly rated Steam all-character guide agrees on the tier-4 direction. I keep both as community build notes sitting under the wiki's numbers.

The copied field list places King in Base. I do not move a character between sets to match a tier list.
